I tried to get a divorce in roughly 1986. I hired an attorney, filled out all the forms, showed up in court with Hospital Records, Police Reports, Letters from my Family Doctor and a Letter from my OB/GYN, all of which documented broken bones, contusions, bruises up and down my 6 month pregnant belly.
The person I had married, at 21, kept changing lawyers, didn’t fill out forms, and didn’t show up a lot of times.
Armed with all my evidence, and a very good Nationally Known Attorney, the Judge looked down at me and decided, “This seems like a ‘Contested Divorce’, and I will not grant a ‘Contested Divorce’”.
That’s exactly what the GOP is trying to go back to.
I can not adequately describe my feelings of Rage and Betrayal.
Suffice to say, it’s been almost 40 years, and I’ve yet to contemplate entering that “Institution” or “Union” again.
Not going to happen. I still have nightmares, he’s kicking the door in, smashing phones, trying to kidnap our son, the hundreds of threats, how and where he’d kill me, and get away with it.
Even his death, 24 years ago, hasn’t stopped the nightmares.
That’s what the GOP want for us “little girls”.
I won’t let that happen again in my lifetime if there’s anything I can do to stop it.
